North Carolina head coach Roy Williams becomes fastest head coach in history to reach 900 wins
The UNC Basketball program completed a double-digit comeback, erasing a 16-point lead to beat Florida State on Saturday afternoon.
The win was not only big for the Tar Heels and their tournament chances but it was a milestone one as well. Head coach Roy Williams earned his 900th win of his career on Saturday, becoming the fastest coach to achieve the feat.
Williams got his coaching start at Kansas before becoming the head coach at North Carolina in 2003. In his career with the Tar Heels, Williams has continued the legacy of Carolina Basketball following in the footsteps of his mentor Dean Smith. Williams has won three national championships and finished runner-up another year.
While it’s been a rough year for the Tar Heels, Saturday was a bright spot as UNC earned a big quad-one win over Florida State and Williams got his 900th win.
The Tar Heels erased a twelve point deficit at halftime and out scored the Seminoles by 20 in the second half. Their come back efforts were led by freshman Walker Kessler, who scored a career high 20 points in the win.
Following the game, the University presented Williams with a special framed North Carolina jersey with the number 900 on the back. The limited fans in attendance were able to witness history in the Dean Dome in just the first game with fans allowed back at a set capacity.
The Tar Heels now have two regular season Atlantic Coast Conference games left as they travel to take on Syracuse Monday and then host Duke in Saturday to close out the season before the conference tournament.
