UNC releases new attendance policy for basketball and spring sports
By Milan Patel
The UNC athletic department announced a new attendance policy that will allow fans of the UNC Basketball program back into the Dean Smith Center.
With the new NC executive order 195 passed by North Carolina governor Roy Cooper, restrictions on indoor and outdoor sporting venues were eased.
Indoor stadiums with at least 5,000 seats are able to operate at 15% capacity. For outdoor stadiums, they are now allowed to operate at 30% capacity.
As the Tar Heel’s spring sports season is just starting, all eyes will still be on the UNC basketball program as they finish up the season.
UNC athletics released this statement on how ticketing will work for home basketball games.
"“For our final two home Men’s Basketball games, Saturday vs. Florida State and March 6 vs. Duke, approximately 75 percent (about 2,400) of the available tickets will be reserved for Carolina students via the student lottery system. Other ticket blocks will be available to the families of student-athletes and coaches, health care workers from UNC Hospitals and a small number of donors (The Rams Club will reach out directly to donors who will have an opportunity to attend). No tickets will be available for sale. More information will be shared with students very shortly from our Ticket Office about the lottery, and we are excited to be able to invite so many Tar Heel students back to the Smith Center.”"
Unfortunately, no tickets will be sold to the general public for the Tar Heels final two home games against Florida State and Duke. But, for spring sports UNC announced that “Beginning tomorrow, February 26, single-game tickets will be on sale for the Baseball game vs. Virginia on February 27, the Men’s Lacrosse game vs. High Point on February 27, and the Women’s Lacrosse games vs. Duke and Vanderbilt on February 26 and 28. Additional games, including Men’s and Women’s Soccer, will go on sale next week.”
As basketball season winds down for Carolina and they fight for a spot in the NCAA tournament, adding fans could be a pivotal factor. With the final two home games against 11th ranked Florida State and rival Duke, the Tar Heels will need the energy of the fans.
