UNC Basketball: Women’s basketball earns senior night victory

A few days before it was announced that North Carolina would allow fans back at a safe capacity following the guidelines set,  it was the Women’s basketball seniors who said their final goodbye, but without fans.

The Tar Heels have had their ups and downs this season but came out dominated in their final home outing against Georgia Tech, improving their record to 12-9 on the year. It was a big win for the team as they hope to build some momentum with the season wrapping up.

Stephanie Watts, Janelle Bailey, and Petra Holesinska were honored in senior fashion at mid-court with their framed jerseys. The three balled out all finishing in double-digit scoring with Bailey getting a 12 point, 10 rebound, double-double. Deja Kelly led all scorers finishing with 22 points with a 7 for 13 shooting performances. Holesinska had it going from deep shooting 3 for 5 behind the arch. Watts also added 14 points with 5 assists helping the Heels to a dominating victory.

The Tar Heels led most of the game with the biggest lead getting to 32. They showed complete control over Georgia Tech in the 2nd quarter when they outscored the Yellow Jackets 29 to 10. The Heels shot 51.7% from three while holding the Yellow Jackets to 30.7% behind the arch. Carolina also controlled the board winning the rebound battle 41 to 28.

The North Carolina women’s basketball team returns to action on Sunday afternoon as they will take on Virginia Tech in the final week of the 2020-21 regular season.
