UNC Basketball: Deja Kelly earns ACC Freshman of the Week honors
UNC women’s basketball standout Deja Kelly has been named ACC Freshman of the Week for her outstanding performances against a pair of conference foes.
North Carolina freshman guard Deja Kelly has been name the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week according to an announcement from the league on Monday afternoon. Kelly’s honor follows a pair of terrific performances against Clemson and NC State last week.
In a 77-64 road victory over the Tigers last Thursday, Kelly scored 19 points on a 5-for-12 shooting performance that included 2-for-4 from beyond the three-point line, and a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line. She also pulled down three rebounds and dished out three assists in a game-high 38 minutes of play.
The Tar Heels lost to the No. 4-ranked Wolfpack three days later, but Kelly scored a team-best 14 points to go along with two rebounds, two assists and a steal in a game-high 39 minutes on the court.
For the week, Kelly averaged 16.5 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. She shot 42.3 percent from the floor, 37.5 percent from long-range and nearly 90 percent at the foul line. Kelly helped North Carolina make the clean sweep of ACC freshman honors last week, as UNC’s Kerwin Walton took home the award on the men’s side.
Kelly and the Tar Heels will be back in action on Thursday when they welcome the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to Carmichael Arena for their final home game of the season.
