UNC Basketball: Where Tar Heels stand in latest Bracketology
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program has certainly felt the effects of COVID-19 in this college basketball season with multiple games postponed so far. The Tar Heels had their game against Virginia Tech postponed earlier in the week and their matchup at Boston College next week has also been postponed.
For a team hoping to improve their NCAA Tournament chances, they are running out of opportunities to do so.
Going into Saturday’s game, the Tar Heels are currently in the tournament field according to most bracket experts but in most cases they are barely in. They really need to stack wins to help their chances as they still have a tough schedule down the stretch. Saturday presents another opportunity for UNC to get a win and improve that resume as they host Louisville.
But where do the Tar Heels stand going into that Saturday showdown? Let’s take a look at the updated bracket projections and where UNC falls:
- ESPN Bracketology (2/19): No. 11 seed in Region 1 vs. No. 6 Purdue (TRENDING DOWN)
- Andy Katz (2/18): Projected OUT
- CBS Sports Jerry Palm (2/19): OUT
- Bracketville (2/15): No. 10 seed in Region 3 vs. No. 7 Florida (TRENDING DOWN)
- USA Today (2/18): No. 10 UNC vs. No. 7 Florida (TRENDING DOWN)
As you can see, the loss to Virginia and win over Northeastern really didn’t help UNC’s case as they are trending down in all of the mock brackets and out in two of them. There is still time for UNC to stack some wins but as I mentioned above, they need to play their games first.
In terms of this weekend’s action, here is what’s going on with the bubble teams and games UNC fans should monitor. (Who UNC needs to win in bold/italic)
Saturday
- Indiana vs. Michigan State
- Syracuse vs. Notre Dame
- BYU vs. Loyola Marymount

- Seton Hall vs. Georgetown
- Mississippi State vs. Ole Miss
- St. Johns vs. DePaul

The Tar Heels have to take care of their own business against Louisville as they enter a two-game stretch with the chance to earn quality wins. They will also host Florida State a week from tomorrow in the Dean Dome.
