The UNC Basketball program is still in pursuit of a five-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class as they hope to land one big fish for that cycle.

After earning commitments from four-star prospects Dontrez Styles and D’Marco Dunn, UNC has been quiet since the Summer in terms of adding more talent. They have missed out a handful of recruits that they were interested in but have maintained that Hunter Sallis, Chet Holmgren and Patrick Baldwin are their three final targets remaining.

While both Baldwin and Holmgren really haven’t revealed when they are going to make a decision, Sallis is set to announce in March.

The five-star combo guard out of Nebraska is UNC’s top target left and is one they really need to land for this class. However, over the past few months it appears as if the Tar Heels have faded a bit in this recruitment and are sitting here in third place going into the March decision behind Gonzaga and Kentucky.

While the Bulldogs appear to be the favorites going into the decision, it hasn’t stopped the Tar Heels from contacting Sallis and still trying to pull it off.

Eric Bossi of 247 Sports talked to Sallis about where things stand with his recruitment and he mentioned a few teams that are contacting him consistently:

"With his decision about six weeks away, Sallis wasn’t giving up any hints. He said he’s still in the final stages of the decision process and that he’s still talking to several of his finalists.“I’ve been talking to Iowa State, Creighton, Gonzaga, North Carolina, Kentucky and Kansas,” said Sallis. “Those are the schools I’ve been talking to the most.”"

The Tar Heels might have an outside shot at landing Sallis but with his importance to the 2021 class, Roy Williams and his staff aren’t backing down just yet. Sallis would be a big addition to the 2021 class and would fill a big need for a scoring guard on the wing.

But they have some work to be done between now and the end of March.
