UNC Basketball: Caleb Love earns another ACC honor
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program completed a 1-1 week in which they started off with a low and then ended with a high in terms of their games.
After starting the week with a loss to Clemson, it was freshman guard Caleb Love that saved the day on Saturday night in Durham. And now heβs being honored again for his play this past week.
For the second time this year, Love was awarded the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week award for his play. This is the second time in three weeks the point guard has earned the honor.
Love averagedΒ 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in the two games last week against Duke and Clemson, including a career-high 25 points in the win over the Blue Devils. He was fantastic in that game on Saturday, hitting clutch shots all game to keep the Tar Heels ahead.
The former five-star recruit got off to a slow start this season, struggling with his shooting especially from behind the perimeter. But lately heβs seeing an uptick in production and is now shooting 32% from the field including 26 percent from the three-point line. Those arenβt high totals but are better than where they were last month.
On the year, Love is averaging 11.1 points, 3.3 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game in his first season in Chapel Hill. He continues to get better and make strides, signaling a bright future ahead for the guard and the program.
Love is the third player to win the ACC Freshman of the Week award this season for UNC joining R.J. Davis and DayβRon Sharpe earlier this year. But heβs the only one of the trio to win it twice so far.
