Former Tar Heels quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, girlfriend announce engagement via social media

Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky might be uncertain about his future in NFL, but he knows who he’ll be with wherever he ends up. The former Tar Heel and 2018 Pro-Bowler is set to marry his long-time girlfriend, Hillary Gallagher. The couple made the news public via Gallagher’s Instagram account on Tuesday night.

And while that’s good news for Trubisky and his now-fiancée, the question of where they’ll be next season might be slightly more unnerving. The fourth-year signal-caller out of North Carolina could be on his way out of the Bears organization after failing to cement himself as the team’s No. 1 option moving forward.

Despite going 6-4 as a starter last season, Trubisky simply didn’t show the kind of improvement that the Bears’ front office was hoping to see. That’s what caused them to turn to journeyman quarterback Nick Foles for a number of games before eventually going back to Trubisky in the final stages of the season.

Trubisky finished the season with 2,055 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also ran the ball 33 times for 195 yards and a score in the final year of his rookie contract. His 16 touchdown passes were the fewest he’s accumulated since his rookie season in 2016, though he played in five fewer games this season than he did last year when he only threw for 17 scores through the air.

Trubisky will now await an offer from the Bears that would keep him in Chicago for another season, or field offers from other teams looking to get an experienced QB on their roster. In the mean time, though, we’ll congratulate the newly-engaged Trubisky, and wish him and his fiancée all the best in the days ahead.
