UNC Basketball: R.J. Davis takes home ACC Honor
By Zack Pearson
UNC Basketball freshman R.J. Davis takes home his first ACC Honor of his career after an impressive showing last week
The UNC Basketball team went 1-1 last week as they fell to 3-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play this season. But even with the 1-1 week that they had, there were still some good signs including the play of freshman R.J. Davis.
The Tar Heels are improving as the season goes on and do look better than their 0-2 start from a few weeks ago. The offense is starting to come along and players are starting to gel together.
Another aspect has been freshman guard R.J. Davis, a player that was recently benched by head coach Roy Williams in place of fellow freshman Kerwin Walton. Instead of Davis taking being out of the starting lineup as a negative, he’s responded with two good games and now an ACC honor.
The conference announced on Monday afternoon that Davis has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week for his play last week.

In two games last week, Davis averaged 14 points and 2 assists per game as he went 9-of-17 from the floor. He improved in his three-point shooting, going 4-of-9 from that area, giving UNC a much-needed boost in their perimeter shooting.
While it’s been a bit of a struggle for Davis early on, he’s continuing to get better and is on track to turn into a really good player for this program. One area he’s also improve that is a telling tale is that he committed just 1 total turnover in the two games, a spot the Tar Heels as a whole have really struggled in this season.
Davis now joins Day’Ron Sharpe as UNC players who have won the Freshman of the Week award this season, marking the first time since 2010-11 the Tar Heels have had multiple players win the award in a season.
