A big five-star recruiting target for the UNC Basketball program updates his recruitment and reveals who is pursuing him the most

The UNC Basketball team won their third-straight Atlantic Coast Conference game on Tuesday night, beating Syracuse at home. But while Roy Williams and his staff navigate this tough 2020-21 college basketball season, recruiting hasn’t taken a backseat.

The NCAA’s imposed dead period which is banning travel for official visits lasts until April and has made it difficult for programs in terms of recruiting. Programs have still been able to contact players through phone calls and zoom meetings, hoping to land a few big ones for their future classes.

One prospect that the Tar Heels have their eye on is five-star small forward Mark Mitchell in the 2022 recruiting class. Mitchell is ranked as the No. 13 overall recruit, No. 5 small forward and the No. 1 player in the state of Kansas per the 247 Sports rankings.

While Mitchell’s recruitment has been silent of late in terms of news, he did talk to Eric Bossi of 247 Sports and revealed which teams are pursuing him the most. One of those teams? North Carolina.

"“No not really just UCLA, Mizzou, Kansas, Arkansas, UNC been on me the hardest,” Mitchell responded when asked if there was anything new with his recruitment. “I’ve been talking to Kentucky a little more recently.”"

The Tar Heels are one of nine programs to offer Mitchell so far in his recruitment and he’s starting to emerge as a top recruit on their board. With UNC yet to land a 2022 commitment, getting a player like Mitchell to start off their class would be huge.

One thing lacking for the Tar Heels this year is a dominant wing that can score from anywhere on the court. Mitchell can fill that void in the future and build a good foundation for the class.

As of now, things are quiet on when Mitchell will announce as he likely still has a long way to go in this recruiting cycle. But this is certainly good news that Williams and his staff are heavily in pursuit.
