UNC Basketball: Coby White scores career-high 36 points in Bulls loss
Former UNC basketball standout and current Chicago Bulls point guard Coby White is becoming a star right in front of our eyes.
Chicago Bulls point guard Coby White set a new career-high on Wednesday night when he scored 36 points in a 128-124 loss to Harrison Barnes (20 points, five assists) and the Sacramento Kings. In the process, White scored his 1,000th career point as a professional, and is just the 10th Chicago Bulls player to reach that milestone in 74 games or less. He joins Michael Jordan and Derrick Rose as the only ones to also have 275 rebounds and 225 assists when scoring their 1,000th point.
White was 15-for-23 from the floor, and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. He hit both free throws that he attempted, pulled down three rebounds and dished out seven assists. Maybe equally as impressive is that he didn’t commit a single turnover in a game-high 40 minutes of play.
Wednesday night’s performance marks the eighth consecutive game that White has recorded double-digit points, and his third straight scoring over 20. White’s seven assists are tied for second-most over his first nine games of the season, but his turnover-free game is the first of the 2020-21 campaign. He’s also connected on at least one three-pointer over his first nine games, and two or more on seven occasions. He’s hit four three-pointers four out of nine contests to begin the season.
The second-year standout from North Carolina is quickly becoming one of the league’s most exciting young players, and he’s easily established himself as a permanent fixture in the Bulls’ starting lineup. He’s now averaging 18.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.6 assists on the season, and is shooting better than 37 percent from long-range.
Coby White and the Bulls will be back on the court on Friday night when they take on LeBron James and the first-place Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center.
