4-star UNC basketball target set to announce list of 10 finalists on Tuesday

Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels are hoping to reel in their first recruit from the class of 2022, and they’ve got a shot with 4-star shooting guard Nick Smith, Jr.

Smith is set to announce his list of 10 finalists at 5:00 p.m. EST Tuesday afternoon, that according to tweets from Tipton Edits, and Smith himself. He’s got a long list of potential destinations that includes Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Georgetown, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Purdue, Texas and Texas Tech. According to an interview with 247Sports last week, it’s Arkansas, Auburn, Georgetown, Kansas, and North Carolina that Smith is hearing from most frequently.

A 6-foot-4, 170 pound junior at Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood, Arkansas, Smith is one of the best shooters in his class, and a player that the Tar Heels could certainly use on their perimeter. Their inability to shoot with any kind of consistency — particularly beyond the three-point line — has greatly hampered their once great offensive attack. Smith, the No. 2 shooting guard in the class of 2022, could definitely help with that.

Smith’s recruitment marks the first UNC target from the state of Arkansas since Malik Monk, a 5-star guard that ultimately chose the University of Kentucky. North Carolina fans might recall that Monk was a big part of the Kentucky Wildcats team that got sent home from the 2017 NCAA Tournament early thanks in part to Luke Maye’s last-second heroics in the Elite 8. Similar to Monk, Smith has great size for his position and a nice shooting touch.

He’s the No. 26 prospect in the class of 2022 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s one spot higher in the Top247 at No. 25, and the consensus top-ranked player from the state of Arkansas.
