UNC Basketball freshman Day’Ron Sharpe earned his first big honor from the ACC with his play over the past week

The UNC Basketball program ended their losing streak on Saturday, avoiding falling to .500 on the season with their win over Notre Dame. But it wasn’t easy for the Tar Heels as they needed a late rally to pull it off in a game that wasn’t even scheduled until New Year’s Eve.

While a win is a win and UNC sits at 6-4, they can thank freshman center/forward Day’Ron Sharpe for his efforts in helping getting that big win.

Sharpe played in 29 minutes on Saturday, leading all scorers with 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, his first double-double of his career. Of those 10 rebounds, 7 of them came on the offensive end of the floor helping lead to more opportunities for the Tar Heels.

For his play in that game and the loss to Georgia Tech, Sharpe picked up his first big Atlantic Coast Conference honor of his brief career at North Carolina.  On Monday, Sharpe was named the ACC Freshman of the Week averaging 16.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game against Georgia Tech and Notre Dame.

Sharpe is the first UNC player to win the freshman of the week honor this season despite the Tar Heels having a very talented 2020 recruiting class. He’s been a big bright spot for the Tar Heels this season, earning big minutes in the paint despite UNC’s four-man rotation of himself, Garrison Brooks, Armando Bacot and Walker Kessler.

While it’s been a struggle early on this year, if the Tar Heels want to turn things around as conference play ramps up, Sharpe will be a key factor in doing so. He will also see his stock rise in terms of the NBA Draft which is something else to keep an eye on.
