The UNC Basketball team appears to be falling behind in the race for one of the best recruits in the 2021 recruiting class

The UNC Basketball program currently has two players signed to their 2021 recruiting class as we are officially hitting the stretch run early in 2021. These next few months will be crucial for programs in terms of that 2021 recruiting class and specifically UNC.

Roy Williams and his staff have three active offers out to recruits left in the 2021 class, all five-star recruits. While they do have two four-stars signed, they would love to add a third player as a five-star recruit.

One target that UNC has had on their radar is five-star center Chet Holmgren. The 7-foot prospect out of Minnesota is one of the top players in this class and considered by many scouts to be a unicorn type player that you don’t see often.

It’s been relatively silent on the recruiting front for Holmgren while schools like UNC, Gonzaga, Minnesota, Georgetown, Baylor, and Ohio State have stayed in the recruitment as his top 7. But as we flipped the calendar to 2021, one team appears to be the favorites.

The first Crystal Ball on 247 Sports was predicted for Holmgren as lead recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer logged his prediction for Gonzaga on Thursday night. For the past few months there have been rumblings that Gonzaga was picking up momentum in this recruitment and could be the favorites. Now, they appear to have done enough to earn a Crystal Ball pick from Meyer which is a good sign for their program.

This recruitment is still not over yet but this doesn’t mean good news for the Tar Heels. While they have stuck in this thing and made an impression on the recruit, it appears as if they have an uphill battle to climb.

As it stands right now, Gonzaga is the No. 1 team in the nation and the favorites to win it all this year and the rich just may get richer here in 2021.
