UNC Football: Sporting News names Chazz Surratt first team All-America
UNC football defensive standout Chazz Surratt has been named a first team All-American by Sporting News.
North Carolina senior linebacker Chazz Surratt has been named a first team All-America selection by Sporting News, the publication announced on Tuesday. Surratt lived up to expectations in 2020 after being tabbed a preseason All-American by just about every sports news outlet in the nation following a terrific junior campaign.
Surratt, a two-year starter on defense for the Tar Heels after making the unlikely transition from the quarterback position, compiled a team-leading 91 tackles this season (49 solo tackles, 42 assists). He added 7.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, three passes defended, a forced fumble and an interception.
Surratt was the unquestioned leader of a North Carolina defensive unit that has continued to improve over the past couple of seasons under the leadership of head coach Mack Brown and his staff. He’s also a projected first round draft pick despite having just two years of experience at his current position.
Shortly after the Tar Heels’ final regular season game and subsequent invite to the Capital One Orange Bowl, Surratt made the decision to opt out of any further games with his team in order to preserve his health and prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft. He finished his career at North Carolina with 207 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, six passes defended and two interceptions.
