UNC basketball program falls out of latest Associated Press Top 25 poll following disappointing loss to NC State Wolfpack

The North Carolina Tar Heels are no longer a top 25-ranked basketball program following their disappointing loss to crosstown rival NC State last week. The Tar Heels, who were previously ranked 17th in the poll, received the 28th-most votes from the Associated Press this week.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs tightened their hold on the poll’s top spot this week with a blowout victory over No. 16 Virginia on Saturday. Mark Few’s squad became the first college basketball program in history to beat four top-20 opponents in their first seven games of the season. They received 62 out of 64 first-place votes this week. The Baylor Bears, who remain undefeated on the season at 6-0, received the other two first-place votes, and come in at No. 2 in this week’s top 25. The Kansas Jayhawks stood pat at No. 3 after wins over Texas Tech and West Virginia.

The one-loss Villanova Wildcats moved up to fourth in the poll, while undefeated Houston improved to No. 5 after wins against Temple and UCF. The 8-1 Wisconsin Badgers beat Michigan State last week, and moved up three spots to No. 6. They’re following by the Tennessee Volunteers and Texas Longhorns at seventh and eighth, respectively. West Virginia fell two spots to ninth, and Iowa dropped to 10th after a loss to then-unranked Minnesota.

Creighton, Missouri and Texas Tech each moved up two spots, and are ranked 11th through 13th. Rutgers is 14th this week, and Illinois is 15th. Michigan and Michigan State are back-to-back at 16th and 17th, while Florida State, Northwestern and Duke round out the top 20. Oregon, Minnesota, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Ohio State are 21st through 25th, respectively.

The unranked Tar Heels will face off with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Wednesday night with an opportunity to even their conference record at 1-1.
