The UNC Basketball program is still showing interest in a top 40 recruit for the 2022 class as they talk on a weekly basis

Roy Williams and his UNC Basketball staff is trying to navigate through this tough 2020-21 college basketball season as postponements could pop up at any time. But while the Tar Heels are doing their best for this year, recruiting hasn’t taken a back seat for future class.

UNC isn’t allowed to host any recruits on campus but they can call and meet with players via Zoom, it’s just how recruiting life is during a pandemic.  And while the Tar Heels don’t have a recruit committed for the 2022 class just yet, they have their eyes on a few key recruits.

The latest recruit to receive interest from North Carolina is four-star power forward Julian Phillips out of South Carolina.

The 6-foot-8, 200-pound Phillips is ranked No. 33 nationally, No. 8 power forward and the No. 1 player in the state of South Carolina per the 247 Sports recruiting rankings. He has a total of 22 offers in his recruitment but has yet to land one from the Tar Heels.

That all could change soon as according to Phillips, UNC is showing significant interest in the recruit and wants to get to know better. The recruit told Dan McDonald of Rivals this in a recent interview:

"“I still don’t have an offer from North Carolina, but I do still talk to Coach (Steve) Robinson probably once a week. He usually calls me on Thursdays and calls it Tarheel Thursdays. He tells me about their program and how they run things there. I’m not sure if they are close. He told me coming into it that it wasn’t going to be a situation where they were going to offer right away. He said he wants to build a relationship and get to know me.”"

With coach Robinson leading the way, it’s likely only a matter of time before Williams gets more involved and potentially offers Phillips. If UNC is showing interest in the recruit and has been over time, then at least an offer seems likely.

The Tar Heels do have a need for a wing in the 2022 class and right now there’s an open spot. It’s just looking like a matter of when they offer more recruits to fill the void.
