UNC women’s basketball star Janelle Bailey has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week.

North Carolina senior center Janelle Bailey has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for a trio of outstanding performances last week that led her team to two big league wins.

Bailey began the week with 14 points and 13 rebounds in a tough loss to the Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables. The Tar Heels struggled to shoot the ball well that game, but Bailey hit 6-of-10 shots from the floor while leading all players in rebounds and blocks (3).

She recorded a 25-point, eight-rebound game on Thursday that helped guide the Tar Heels to a 92-68 blowout win over the 18th-ranked Syracuse Orange. She shot an outstanding 10-for-15 from the floor, and 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also pulled down eight rebounds to go along with two assists and two steals in just 24 minutes of play.

Her third game of the week, a thrilling 77-74 overtime victory against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, was a 19-point, 12-rebounds performance that saw her shoot 50 percent (7-for-14) from the floor while knocking down 5-of-7 attempts from the charity stripe.

For the week, Bailey averaged 19.3 points and 11 rebounds on 23-of-39 (58.9 percent) shooting from the floor and 12-of-16 (75.0 percent) from the foul line. She tallied 33 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and three steals.

For the season, Bailey is averaging 14.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. She’s leading the Tar Heels in both categories, despite only playing the fourth-most minutes. She’s shooting 56.4 percent from the floor, and 67.7 percent from the free throw line.
