UNC women’s basketball program improves to 7-2 on the season with 77-74 overtime victory over Wake Forest

448. 77. 441. Final. 74

Janelle Bailey led the Tar Heels with 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, as North Carolina beat Wake Forest by a final score of 77-74 in overtime at Carmichael Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Bailey hit 7-of-14 shots for the game and 5-of-7 from the free throw line, leading the Tar Heels in scoring for the second consecutive game. Standout freshman guard Alyssa Ustby added 15 points on a 7-for-11 shooting performance to go along with six rebounds. Both Bailey and Ustby played a team-high 41 minutes for the Tar Heels. Petra Holešínská added 14 points and three steals, and Kennedy Todd-Williams gave the Tar Heels 10 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes off the UNC bench.

North Carolina, now 7-2 on the season, shot just 25-of-67 (37.3 percent) from the floor, and 5-of-24 (20.8) from three-point range. They also struggled from the free throw line again, converting just 22 of their 31 attempts for the game. They did, however, outrebound the Demon Deacons by 15, as well as commit 11 fewer fouls and three less turnovers.

Wake Forest was led by Jewel Spear, who scored a game-high 22 points while shooting 6-for-12 from beyond the arc. Alexandria Scruggs gave Wake 16 points and five rebounds, while two other Demon Deacons, Gina Conti and Ivana Raca, added 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Demon Deacons shot the ball better than North Carolina as a team, connecting on 40.3 percent of their shots from the floor, and 46.7 percent of their attempts from long-range. They simply committed too many turnovers and put the Tar Heels on the free throw line too many times to come away with the conference road win.

North Carolina will have an 11-day break between games before traveling to Syracuse, New York on December 31 for a rematch with the Orange, who they throttled by 24 points last week.
