UNC Football: Sam Howell named finalist for Manning Award
UNC football standout Sam Howell has been named a Manning Award finalist
North Carolina sophomore quarterback Sam Howell has been named one of 12 finalists for the 2020 Manning Award. The award, which is sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, recognizes the nation’s top quarterback each season. The winner of the award will be announced after bowl games are completed in January.
The Manning Award was created in 2004 in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that take’s the candidates’ bowl performances into account when determining a winner.
Howell has accumulated 3,352 yards and 27 touchdowns, both of which lead all ACC quarterbacks. He also leads the conference in yards per game (304.7), and passer rating (182.23). Howell ranks third in the nation in passing yards, and fifth in touchdown passes. The versatile signal-caller has also run for five touchdowns this season, and been on the receiving end of another. In doing so, he’s helped guide the Tar Heels to an 8-3 regular season record, and a likely berth in the Capital One Orange Bowl.
