The UNC football program is on the rise in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, passing the Miami Hurricanes for a likely spot in the Orange Bowl.

The North Carolina Tar Heels put on one of the greatest offensive displays in the history of college football on Saturday afternoon, embarrassing the Miami Hurricanes by 36 points on their home turf. Because of that, the Tar Heels have now passed the Hurricanes in the latest release of the College Football Playoff rankings, setting North Carolina up for a likely bid to one of the sport’s most coveted bowl games.

Ranked at No. 15 on the list of 25 teams and three spots ahead of the Hurricanes, the Tar Heels have positioned themselves for an invite to the Capital One Orange Bowl to be played on Saturday, January 2. There are still some other moving pieces involved, however, such as the ACC Championship game between Clemson and Notre Dame. If Clemson wins, North Carolina should be a shoe-in for the Orange Bowl. If Notre Dame wins, it could potentially knock Clemson out of the College Football Playoff and into the Orange Bowl. For now, though, the Tar Heels have done all that they can, and await the results of this week’s conference title game.

Alabama, Notre Dame Clemson, Ohio State and Texas A&M are again ranked one through five in the poll. Iowa State moved up to sixth this week, and is followed by Florida, Georgia, Cincinnati and Oklahoma. Indiana, Coastal Carolina, USC and Northwestern are 11th through 14th, followed by the Tar Heels at No. 15.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are ranked 16th, and BYU is 17th. Miami, Louisiana and Texas round out the top 20. Oklahoma State, NC State, Tulsa, San Jose State and Colorado are 21st through 25th, respectively.
