UNC Basketball: Tar Heels slide several spots, but remain in latest AP Top 25
UNC basketball program slides six spots after 13-point loss to Iowa, but remains in latest Associated Press top 25 poll
The North Carolina Tar Heels suffered their second defeat of the season last week in a 13-point loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes. They followed it up with a sloppy 73-67 victory over NC Central on Saturday that was far tighter than it ever should have been.
As a result, North Carolina dropped several spots in the Associated Press top 25 poll that was released on Monday afternoon. The Tar Heels, now 4-2 on the season, fell six spots from their previous perch at No. 16 in the poll to No. 22.
Gonzaga has been on pause since Covid-19 tests caused the team’s game against Baylor to get postponed two weekends ago. The Bulldogs remain in the poll’s top spot, however, and are followed by the Bears of Baylor. Luka Garza and the Hawkeyes continue to roll, and rank third after getting off to a perfect 5-0 start. Undefeated Michigan State is fourth, and the 6-1 Kansas Jayhawks are ranked fifth this week.
The 4-0 Houston Cougars are at No. 6, and they’re followed by the Villanova Wildcats and West Virginia Mountaineers at seventh and eighth, respectively. Creighton and Tennessee round out this week’s top 10. Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Texas Tech and Florida State are ranked 11th through 15th. After a huge victory over border rival Illinois, the Missouri Tigers jump into the poll at No. 16 this week. The ACC’s Virginia Cavaliers are No. 17, and are followed by San Diego State at No. 18, Rutgers at No. 19 and Ohio State at No. 20.
The Duke Blue Devils fell all the way to 21st in this week’s poll after dropping to 2-2 on the season. They’ve lost consecutive games on their home court, and their Hall-of-Fame head coach is reach to throw in the towel on this season as a result. After North Carolina at No. 22, it’s Louisville, Clemson and Michigan at 23, 24 and 25.
