The UNC football program stands pat in the College Football Playoff rankings following last week’s victory over Western Carolina.

The North Carolina Tar Heels did on Saturday what good teams are supposed to do against a smaller program that’s outmatched both in size and athleticism; win by 40 points. Thanks to their latest victory, and an overall record of 7-3 on the season, the Tar Heels remained in the top 20 of the updated College Football Playoff rankings that were released on Tuesday night.

Ranked at No. 17 on the list of 25 teams, the Tar Heels have one regular season game remaining on their 2020 slate. That game, their eleventh of the season, is against the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes, who are also ranked 10th in the College Football Playoff standings, are one of three Atlantic Coast Conference schools ranked ahead of North Carolina  — Notre Dame and Clemson are the other two. The Irish and Tigers are again ranked second and third in the standings, which are led by undefeated SEC powerhouse Alabama.

After Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson at one through three, it’s Ohio State at No. 4, and Texas A&M at No. 5. The Florida Gators, who control their own destiny with an upcoming matchup with top-ranked Alabama on the horizon, are ranked sixth. Iowa State moved up two spots to seventh this week, while the Cincinnati Bearcats dropped to eighth. Georgia and Miami round out this week’s top 10.

Oklahoma, Indiana, Coastal Carolina, Northwestern and USC are ranked eleventh through fifteenth. The Iowa Hawkeyes made the jump to No. 16 this week, and are followed by North Carolina, BYU, Louisiana and Texas. Colorado, Oklahoma State, NC State, Tulsa and Missouri are 21st through 25th, respectively.
