UNC Basketball: 5 Things we learned from Maui Invite
By Zack Pearson
The free-throw shooting needs to get better as well
Another area that needs to improve is free-throw shooting and there is no excuse for how bad UNC has been this season.
Through four games, UNC is getting to the foul line as they have 112 attempts on the year but have made just 73 which translates to 65.1 percent. That ranks 198th. The good news is that UNC is getting to the foul line in games, they just aren’t taking advantage of that. In the loss to Texas, UNC was just 5 of 13 on free throws in the first half, helping them fall into a deficit at halftime.
They did get better, finishing 18 of 32 from the free throw line in the game but if they had just two or three of those misses back, they could potentially be looking at overtime or even a win.
This has been a problem for a few years now, as UNC has really struggled to be consistently good at the charity stripe. But for me, this is going to be arguably the biggest key this season to success. With how good UNC is in the paint and aggressive guards that attack the basket, they are going to get chances to go to the line. They just need to convert on them.
