Could the UNC Basketball program be interested in a former four-star recruiting target from the 2019 class now that he’s available?

While Roy Williams welcomed in a four-man 2019 recruiting class for the UNC Basketball program headlined by Cole Anthony and Armando Bacot, two five-star players. The class was ranked No. 9 overall and No. 2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and so far this season, Bacot is the only player to play from that class.

Cole Anthony left for the NBA after one year, Jeremiah Francis transferred to New Mexico and Anthony Harris is still sidelined with a knee injury. But a former target from that 2019 class had a big decision to make last week and he could be available for the Tar Heels to pursue again.

Four-star center Will Baker was a target of Williams and his staff for the 2019 recruiting class before he ultimately chose Texas over the Tar Heels in his recruitment. Last week, Baker made the decision to transfer out from Texas and now is on the market for a new team.

Baker had over 20 offers in his recruitment including from UNC but in the end, both Texas and UCLA separated themselves in the recruitment. He was ranked as the No. 35 overall recruit, No. 9 center and No. 5 in Texas per the 247 Sports recruiting rankings. In the end he picked Texas where he played just one season.

With Baker now back on the market, could the Tar Heels be interested? There’s been nothing out there that the Tar Heels have reached out yet but with the potential of their post players leaving in a year, they could be interested. Garrison Brooks leaves after this year and both Day’Ron Sharpe and Walker Kessler have NBA potential whether or not it’s after one year but potentially two seasons. There’s a need for some depth and Baker can fill that.

This will certainly be a situation to keep an eye on if the Tar Heels do reach out. However, there’s also the situation where they don’t reach out.
