UNC football program moves up two spots in latest College Football Playoff rankings despite double-digit loss to Notre Dame

Despite a Week 13 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the up-and-coming North Carolina Tar Heels rose two spots in the updated College Football Playoff rankings that were released on Monday night.

Now at No. 17 on the list of 25 teams, the Tar Heels rose two spots from their previous perch. They’re 6-3 on the season, and rank fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings. The three schools ahead of them in the ACC standings — Notre Dame, Clemson and Miami — are all ranked inside the top 10 of the College Football Playoff rankings, which are led by undefeated SEC powerhouse Alabama.

After the Crimson Tide at No. 1, it’s Notre Dame and Clemson at two and three, respectively. They’re followed by the 4-0 Ohio State Buckeyes, and the one-loss Texas A&M Aggies. The Florida Gators are sixth, and the Cincinnati Bearcats are seventh. Georgia, Iowa State and Miami round out the top 10.

Oklahoma, Indiana, BYU, Northwestern and Oklahoma State are ranked eleventh through fifteenth. Wisconsin is ranked No. 16, and is followed by North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Iowa and USC. Marshall, Washington, Oregon, Tulsa and Louisiana are 21st through 25th, respectively.

The Tar Heels are set to play Western Carolina this weekend in their penultimate regular season game, one that leads up to a big top 25 matchup with the Miami Hurricanes.
