UNC Basketball: Garrison Brooks scores point No. 1,000 for Tar Heels
UNC basketball’s Garrison Brooks scores his 1,000th career point in opening game of Maui Invitational
North Carolina senior power forward Garrison Brooks scored his 1,000th career point in the Tar Heels’ opening round Maui Invitational matchup with the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels on Monday night.
Brooks hit and passed the 1,000-point plateau on a contested layup late in the first half, one that brought the Tar Heels to within one point of the Runnin’ Rebels after trailing by 13 to start the game. He was fouled on the made bucket, and knocked down his free throw to tie the game at 22 a piece with 6:26 left before the intermission.
There was some confusion as to how many points Brooks entered the game with due to a pair of free throws that were incorrectly credited to Armando Bacot during last week’s season-opener against College of Charleston. Because of that, there were those that thought Brooks notched 1,000 points with his first bucket of the game just a couple minutes earlier. But regardless of whether Brooks was two buckets away or just one, he left no doubt of his 1,000-point achievement with his second made bucket.
Brooks became the 78th player in UNC basketball history to score 1,000 points. That’s more than any other program in college basketball history, and nine players ahead of second-place Louisville. He’ll have some time to add to his place in UNC history, as he and the Tar Heels are just two games into a 27-game schedule.
