Former UNC basketball standout Theo Pinson signs new two-way contract with New York Knicks

The New York Knicks announced on Sunday that they had signed guard/forward Theo Pinson to a two-way contract. Though terms of the contract were not disclosed, the deal is probably similar to the one that Pinson signed with the Brooklyn Nets two years ago after going undrafted out of the University of North Carolina in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The 6-foot-5, 212-pound Pinson appeared in 51 games over two seasons with the Nets, and averaged 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in that time. He logged better than 11 minutes per game off the bench in both seasons, while splitting time with the organization’s G-League affiliate, the Long Island Nets.

Despite shooting the ball extremely well during his time in the G-League, Pinson has struggled to consistently knock down shots at the NBA level. He’s connected on just 30.7 percent of his shots from the floor, and 21.4 percent from three-point range. His shooting woes were at their worst during the 2019-20 season when he hit just 29 percent of his total shots, and less than 19 percent from beyond the arc. He has, however, boasted an impressive 89.5 percent mark from the free throw line during that span, highlighted by a free throw percentage of 93.8 last season.

He appeared in nine game for Long Island last season, averaging 15.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists in nearly 32 minutes per game. He was even better the season before when he averaged 20.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists in 34.6 minutes. He shot career-highs from the floor (44.5 percent) and from beyond the arc (38.4 percent) in 34 games.
