The UNC Football team is out of the latest AP Top 25 rankings that were released on Sunday afternoon following their loss to Notre Dame.

The UNC Football program’s return to the Associated Press Top 25 poll has been short lived, lasting just one week.

After Mack Brown’s Tar Heels jumped back into the rankings last Sunday despite having a bye week, they are now back on the outside looking in. UNC dropped their game this week at home to No. 2 Notre Dame 31-17 and with that, they fell from No. 25 to pretty much No. 26, receiving the most votes of any unranked team with 65.

The Tar Heels currently sit at 6-3 on the year and have just two regular season games remaining as they return to the field next Saturday to host Western Carolina. A win on Saturday likely puts them back in the poll if a team in the 20’s ahead of them losses. They then have the chance to get higher with a win over Miami in their regular-season finale.

While you would love to be ranked in the AP Top 25, the big poll that matters for UNC is the College Football Playoff rankings. The Tar Heels are hoping to land in a big bowl game, with their only shot being their big target. The Tar Heels would have to pass up Miami in order to get there which takes them winning out and Miami dropping a bit.

Alabama stayed in the top spot in the rankings, followed by No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Clemson. There wasn’t much of a shakeup in the Top 10 this week but with just a few weeks left, things will start to get interesting in all three rankings.
