UNC women’s basketball moves to 2-0 on the new season with commanding win over UNC-Greensboro

The North Carolina women’s basketball team was just four points shy of the century mark on Saturday afternoon thanks to a dominant performance against UNC-Greensboro in a 96-35 home victory.

The Tar Heels were led by Anya Poole, who scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 from the three-point line. Petra Holešínská added 14 points in just 16 minutes of a play on a terrific 5-for-7 shooting performance that included a 4-of-5 mark from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Deja Kelly poured in 13 points of her own to go along with a team-high five assists, while senior center Janelle Bailey gave the Tar Heels 10 points and eight rebounds.

Redshirt sophomore Ariel Young led all Tar Heels with 10 rebounds off the bench in just 15 game minutes. She also scored 11 points to go along with three assists, a block and a steal. Another pair of UNC reserves, graduate student Stephanie Watts and sophomore guard Kennady Tucker, combined to dish out nine assists and zero turnovers. Watts also had a team-high four steals in her 21 minutes of play.

The Tar Heels shot well as a team for the game, knocking down 36-of-64 shots from the floor and 9-of-20 from long-distance. They shot 15-for-18 from the free throw line, and outrebounded UNC-Greensboro by 21. They also compiled 16 more assists, and committed seven fewer turnovers than the Spartans.

UNC-Greensboro got eight players in the scoring column, but none more than Pernilla Sorensen’s eight. It was a rough night for Sorensen, though, as she shot just 2-for-11 overall and 2-for-10 from beyond the three-point line. The rest of the Spartans didn’t fare much better, connecting on just 10 of their 55 shots for the game, as well as a dreadful 4-for-27 mark from long-range.
