UNC Basketball: Tar Heels offer ‘meant a lot’ to 2022 recruit
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program is in pursuit of this talented five-star forward in the 2022 recruiting class. Did their offer change anything?
As the 2021 recruiting board narrows for the UNC Basketball program, some of that focus is starting to shift towards 2022.
Roy Williams and his staff have a total of four active offers out in the 2022 recruiting class after five-star combo guard Skyy Clark committed to Kentucky last month. The latest prospect to receive an offer from the Tar Heels is five-star forward Jarace Walker.
The Bradenton, Florida native currently plays at IMG Academy and is ranked as the No. 9 overall recruit, No. 2 power forward and No. 4 player in the state of Florida per 247 Sports. Walker is a legit prospect that excels in scoring but can also be an effective rebounder. In his recruitment so far, Walker has a total of 19 offers including some pretty big programs pursuing him.
Among them is UNC, the newest team in his recruitment and the latest buzz surrounding it is that his latest offer from the Tar Heels could change some things in his recruitment. Colby Giaacubeno of 247 Sports recently wrote on some Maryland recruiting targets including Walker and had this interesting nugget at the end:
"Maryland has developed a good relationship with Walker’s locally-based AAU program, Team Thrill. While they were involved with Walker early on, it will be hard to rip him from a blueblood. North Carolina recently offered the 6-foot-9 versatile forward and it has been no secret that the offer meant a lot to Walker and his family."
Hm.
There has been buzz that the UNC offer was an important one for Walker, and rightfully so as recruits are going to get excited anytime a program of UNC’s caliber offers you. But how much will it matter in the long run?
It’s tough to tell where Walker is at in his recruitment right now as there is still a long ways to go in this thing. However, getting him on campus eventually at some point next year will be huge for the Tar Heels if they can swing it. I like where they stand right now but as mentioned, there’s a lot of time left. But this is still a good thing.
