Former UNC basketball player and current ESPN analyst Vince Carter wins the 2019-20 NBA Sportsmanship Award

Vince Carter was named the winner of the 2019-20 NBA Sportsmanship Award on Thursday as voted on by his peers. He accepts the award on his way out of the NBA after a record-setting 22-year career that spanned four decades. The award was designed to honor the player that best represents the league’s ideals of sportsmanship on the court.

Carter was selected after a process that includes each NBA team nominating one player, and that list of 30 being trimmed down to just six — one nominee from each of the league’s six divisions. Better than 250 player votes were then cast through confidential balloting conducted by the league office. The former Tar Heel also received the Joe Dumars Trophy as the winner of the Sportsmanship Award.

Other finalists for the award include Oklahoma City’s Steven Adams, Sacramento’s Harrison Barnes, Detroit’s Langston Galloway, Memphis’ Tyus Jones and Brooklyn’s Garrett Temple. Carter received 143 of the 266 first-place votes and 2,520 total points. Nearly 800 points separated him from runner-up Garrett Temple.

Carter, an 8-time NBA All-Star, scored over 25,000 points for the Raptors, Nets, Magic, Suns, Mavericks, Grizzlies, Kings and Hawks. He’ll undoubtedly be remembered as one of, if not the best, dunkers in the history of the sport. He’ll also be a first ballot Hall-of-Famer a few years from now, and will remain one of the league’s most beloved players ever.

He recently shifted into the broadcast booth where he will work as a college basketball studio and game analyst, as well as making regular appearances on pillar ESPN studio shows such as NBA Countdown, The Jump, Get Up, First Take and SportsCenter with special appearances on College Game Day.
