Did former UNC basketball star Coby White cut his signature locks?

Despite leaving North Carolina for the NBA after just one season, former UNC point guard Coby White left an indelible mark on Tar Heel fans. They loved him for his talent, his athleticism, his frenetic style of play, his smile, his winner’s mentality, and maybe as much as anything else, his hair.

White came to campus in 2018 with the reputation of a big-time scorer and play-maker, and he unequivocally lived up to both. It was his hair, however, that took on a life of its own during his short but memorable stint in the college ranks. Everyone from Jay Bilas to Dick Vitale to Jeff Van Gundy (are you noticing a trend?) made comments about White’s beautiful locks. Whether free-flowing afro or tightly pinned down dread locks pulled into a ponytail, White’s hair garnered the attention of all who watched him play.

That’s why his recent instagram posts startled some of his fans, who took one look at White’s head and immediately asked the question, “Where did his hair go?” Go ahead; see for yourself.

But White’s hairstyle change was no more than a convincing SnapChat filter that made it look as if he’d nixed his famous hair following a tremendous rookie season that saw him score 13.2 points per game off the Chicago bench. So Coby White fans need not despair, because the 2019-20 second team All-Rookie selection was just having a little offseason fun on social media.

White and his luscious locks will return to Chicago next season with hopes of being named a full time starter. Now that Jim Boylen is out as head coach and Billy Donovan is in command, White’s promotion to the starting lineup in year two is much more likely.

If nothing else, he’s got starting lineup quality hair.
