UNC Basketball: Kentucky, North Carolina latest to contact 4-star prospect

The Kentucky Wildcats join the UNC basketball program in contacting 4-star shooting guard in class of 2022

The North Carolina Tar Heels are hoping to receive a commitment from 4-star shooting guard D’Marco Dunn on Wednesday afternoon. And according to Stockrisers’ Jake Weingarten, assistant coaches from UNC have already begun reaching out to a similar player in the class of 2022.

The Tar Heels are apparently looking to add perimeter depth to a roster that already includes three freshman shooting guards in Anthony Harris, R.J. Davis and Kerwin Walton. They join Kentucky as the two most recent programs to reach out to fellow 4-star shooting guard Isaac McKneely.

The 6-foot-4, 170-pound McKneely is a junior at Poca High School in Poca, West Virginia. He’s already holding nearly 20 scholarship offers, including ones from Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Louisville, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Xavier.

In addition to a terrific offensive skill set that includes an effective jump shot beyond the three-point line, McKneely is a surprisingly good athlete. He’s got good handles, and a quick first step. He can beat defenders off the dribble, and drive the lane through traffic. He’s also a good finisher, and can throw down some really acrobatic dunks. Defenses are forced to respect his jumper, which helps spread the floor on offense.

It’s extremely early in McKneely’s recruitment, and entirely too soon to make assumptions about where he might end up. He’ll likely hold a lot more offers before he’s ever able to make campus visits or name a list of finalists. And it’ll probably be another year or so before he’s ready to make a commitment.

He’s ranked 57th in the 247Sports Composite. He’s No. 10 among shooting guards in the class, and first in the state of West Virginia.
