UNC Basketball: Will D’Marco Dunn commit to Tar Heels on Sept 30?
The UNC basketball program is looking for its second commitment of the 2021 class when D’Marco Dunn announces his decision on September 30.
The North Carolina Tar Heels are hoping to get their second commitment of the 2021 class next week when 4-star shooting guard D’Marco Dunn announces his college decision. News of Dunn’s upcoming commitment was made public on Saturday afternoon when he took to his personal Twitter account to announce a September 30 decision day.
Of the seven uncommitted prospects in the class of 2021 that currently hold a scholarship offer from North Carolina, Dunn is the one that appears to be the most likely bet for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels. He’s long been seen as a heavy UNC lean, evidenced by a consensus of FutureCast votes by the recruiting analysts and college basketball insiders at Rivals.
My best guess is that Dunn will do what almost everyone thinks he will, and commit to North Carolina. The Tar Heels have other back court prospects that they are still trying to add to their 2021 class, but Dunn will be a solid addition that’s likely to hang around campus for multiple seasons.
A 6-foot-4, 180-pound standout at Westover High School, Dunn moved from Tucson, Arizona to Fayetteville, North Carolina prior to his junior season. He quickly established himself as the leader of a Westover squad that recorded a perfect 30-0 record last season. He averaged 20.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, two assists and 2.7 steals per game as a junior. He also connected on 45 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
Dunn has a smooth, high release on his jump shot that helps him knock down a good percentage of his attempts from long-range. He’s improving as a ball handler, and can hit shots from the mid-range. He’s got speed in the open court, and runs the floor well on the fast break. He’ll also drive the lane, and finish strong in the paint when the opportunity presents itself.
Despite being ranked just 146th in the 247Sports Composite last summer, Dunn is up to No. 79 in the site’s most recent iteration of the standings. He is No. 16 among shooting guards, and second in the state of North Carolina.
