A top 5-star UNC Basketball recruiting target recently took a trip to campus and dished on his experience in Chapel Hill

While recruits and coaches aren’t allowed to meet for official visits and won’t be until at least next year, the UNC Basketball program did receive and unofficial visit recently.

Five-star forward Trey Kaufman made the trip from the Midwest to the East Coast and visited UNC’s campus in Chapel Hill. Kaufman and his parents used this opportunity to get a feel for what Chapel Hill was like, one of five schools still on his list.

There wasn’t any interaction with coach Roy Williams and the visit came on a trip that also included a visit to Virginia, another school fighting to land him. With a top 5 of UNC, Virginia, Indiana, Indiana State and Purdue, getting to those out of state schools was important.

Following those visits, Kaufman caught up with Hoosiers Now of Sports Illustrated to break down the trip. Here is what he said about being on UNC and Virginia’s campus:

"“Both places are very good. There were some small things we were trying to accomplish and what I was looking for, such as how far the practice room would be from the dorms and some other things,” Kaufman said. “But for the most part, it was just familiarizing myself with both places and, you know, if I were going to commit to either one of those places, I’d want to know at least how it looks like and how it feels before I got there.”"

The Tar Heels have picked up some momentum in this recruitment since offering him a few months back. They are considered a real contender and could pull him out of the state of Indiana.

But having this recruiting restriction in terms of traveling is a big deal. That’s why Kaufman visiting campus on his own is so important. He has a feel of Chapel Hill and now has at least been there.

As it stands now, it’s tough to tell who exactly is the leader but there are some that think this is a battle between UNC and Indiana. I wouldn’t count Virginia out yet either but the Tar Heels appear to be in good shape.
