UNC Football: Chazz Surratt named Bednarik Award Player of the Week
UNC football defensive standout Chazz Surratt has been named the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week
Chazz Surratt returned to North Carolina for his senior season with big expectations hanging overhead. If his first game of the season is any indication, those expectations don’t appear to be weighing very heavily on him.
Surratt was named the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week after his performance against the Syracuse Orange in week one. The former quarterback turned linebacker picked up right where he left off a season ago. He led the Tar Heels’ 31-6 defensive showcase over the Orange on Saturday with a team-high nine tackles. Surratt made his way into the offensive back field early and often, sacking the quarterback twice, and picking up 2.5 tackles for loss. He also had a pair of QB hurries in leading a much-improved North Carolina defense.
As a team, the Tar Heels gave up just 202 yards of total offense — 134 through the air, and 68 on the ground. They only surrendered 3.5 yards per pass, and 1.9 yards per rush. They also helped keep the ball in the hands of the offense, as the Tar Heels had a four-plus minute advantage in time of possession.
Surratt’s latest honor comes just a day after being named ACC Linebacker of the Week. He was named to three award watch lists prior to the start of the season: the Nagurski Trophy, the Butkus Award and the Bednarik Award.
Surratt and the Tar Heels will be back on the field this Saturday for an afternoon game with the Charlotte 49ers at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
