UNC Basketball: 5-star prospect eliminates Tar Heels from contention
UNC basketball program eliminated from contention in 5-star shooting guard’s recruitment
Roy Williams and the North Carolina basketball program were hoping for a commitment from one of the nation’s top shooting guards, but that’s not going to happen now that Trevor Keels has eliminated the Tar Heels from contention. The 5-star prospect out of Fairfax, Virginia named a list of three finalists on Wednesday night that included Duke, Villanova and Virginia.

It was basically a forgone conclusion that the Blue Devils and Wildcats would make Keels’ final list, but the third and final team to make his list was thought to be a toss-up between the Tar Heels and Cavaliers. It turns out that Tony Bennett’s squad outlasted Roy Williams and company, but it wasn’t likely that North Carolina would ultimately beat the likes of Duke and Villanova in this recruitment anyway. The same goes for Virginia, despite being the school closest to Keels’ hometown. This one appears, at the moment, to be a two-horse race between Duke and Villanova.
Keels made campus visits to each of the three schools on his list, which was said to be a major factor in his decision. Despite which of the three he ends up choosing, Keels will be a tremendous addition to the team’s back court next season. His size, athleticism and scoring ability should seamlessly translate to the college game
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Keels is ranked No. 15 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s first among shooting guards in the class, and No. 1 in the state of Virginia.
