4-star UNC basketball target Trey Kaufman announces five finalists

4-star class of 2021 prospect Trey Kaufman took to Instagram on Tuesday to announce the five finalists in his recruitment. Making the cut for the rising senior out of Silver Creek High School is Indiana, Indiana State, North Carolina, Purdue and Virginia.

Indiana is the least surprising of the five schools that remain on Kaufman’s list, as Archie Miller and the hometown Hoosiers have been after him for quite some time. Another pair of in-state schools, Indiana State and Purdue, aren’t much of a shock, either. It’s North Carolina and Virginia that will have to work the hardest to draw Kaufman away from his stomping grounds in Sellersburg, Indiana, though both seem to be in a pretty good position at the moment.

After making his announcement, Kaufman spoke specifically about each five finalists, including what it is that intrigues him about Roy Williams and the Tar Heels.

"“The culture that they have, you could really feel that when you went there,” Kaufman told the Courier Journal of the Tar Heels. “National champions. All the people that they’ve had that have gone to the league. … I think I have a good chance of playing right away once I get there. Obviously, a legendary coach and his offensive set isn’t like run this play and next time run this play. It’s free-flowing.”"

Kaufman, the 2020 Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year, averaged 25.8 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.6 blocks and 1.1 steals to help lead Silver Creek to a 25-2 record prior to the season’s abrupt ending due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He shot 64 percent from the floor, and 40 percent from beyond the arc.

He’s ranked 55th in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s 16th among players at his position, and second in the state of Indiana. The Top247 has him ranked even higher at No. 31 overall, and seventh among power forwards. He’s the 39th-ranked prospect in the nation according to Rivals, and the No. 11 power forward in the class.
