UNC Basketball: Roy Williams talks with 5-star SF Harrison Ingram
Roy Williams, UNC basketball program continue pursuit of 5-star small forward Harrison Ingram
The North Carolina basketball program hasn’t gotten a commitment from an elite wing since Nassir Little gave his pledge to the Tar Heels in October of 2017. So, yeah, it’s been a while. But that doesn’t mean that it’s never going to happen again, and it certainly doesn’t mean that they haven’t been close a number of times.
The Tar Heels are close again, if nothing else, thanks to their tireless efforts with one Harrison Ingram. A 6-foot-7, 210-pound small forward out of St. Mark’s High School in Dallas, Texas, Ingram is not only one of the best small forwards in the class of 2021, but one of the top players in the nation regardless of position. A commitment from Ingram would certainly end the Tar Heels’ recent drought with blue chip wings.
Roy Williams spoke to Ingram on Monday night according to a tweet from Stockrisers’ Jake Weingarten. The Tar Heels are one of six finalists for the senior forward, joining Harvard, Howard, Michigan, Purdue and Stanford. For the time being, it’s Purdue and Stanford that appear to be in the best shape for Ingram, as college basketball insiders and recruiting analysts are currently split between the Boilermakers and Cardinal.
Ingram is a versatile wing with the ability to play multiple positions on both ends of the floor. He’s got great size and strength for his position, and creates mismatches for the opposition. He’s a good ball-handler, and distributor. He’s a solid rebounder, and should be an above-average defender at the college level. While he is a good jump shooter, he’s got a low release on the ball that he’s still working to improve. And although he may not be the most athletic guy in the bunch, he’s got the ability to throw down a pretty dunk from time to time.
Ingram is ranked 10th in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s a top-5 player at his position, and first in the state of Texas. He’s ranked 16th in the ESPN100, and eighth in the Rivals150.
