This UNC Basketball recruiting target is starting to climb the rankings as he has now moved up into the Top 10 overall by 247 Sports

The UNC Basketball program is still in heavy pursuit of five-star guard Hunter Sallis in the 2021 recruiting class.

Coming off a 2020 cycle in which they turned in a Top 2 class, Roy Williams and his staff are hoping to build another good class. With just one commitment in the 2021 cycle, the pressure is on for UNC to add another big recruit. One five-star player they are after is Sallis and the Tar Heels might have a good shot.

The Nebraska native has been on UNC’s radar for months now and has emerged as one their top targets on the big board. But he’s also begun to elevate his game overall as one of the top players in the country.

Just this past week 247 Sports released their updated rankings for the 2021 recruiting class and Sallis was among the big movers. He jumped up 19 spots from No.25 to No. 6 in the updated rankings. Here is what 247 analyst Brian Snow had to say about Sallis’ game and his rankings update:

"When it comes to the five-star range, no one made a bigger jump than did Sallis. The native of Nebraska has had a huge rise over the last 12 months, and he took things to an even higher level this summer during some showcase opportunities.Sallis has an impressive combination of size, skill and athleticism, and the scary part is, he doesn’t even seem to realize just how good he is. Once Sallis takes the next step to becoming an alpha on the court, things will go to an ever higher level."

With a big need on the perimeter, the Tar Heels would love to add a player like Sallis to their backcourt. They lost Cole Anthony after one season and five-star Caleb Love could be a one-and-done player as well.

A future backcourt of Sallis, Anthony Harris and R.J. Davis could be a really good one for the program. Now, Williams and his staff just have to make that happen. The Tar Heels did make Sallis’ Top 12, the latest development in his recruitment which is a good sign.

But there appears to be a long way to go in this recruitment.
