UNC Basketball: Are Tar Heels team to beat for 2021 prospect?
By Zack Pearson
Is the UNC Basketball program in the lead for this four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class? One analyst appears to think so
The recruitment for four-star shooting guard D’Marco Dunn has changed a bit over the past several months. After the UNC Basketball program offered Dunn, he started to gain some momentum and make a run in the rankings.
Since then, Dunn has received offers from Arizona, Marquette, Texas and others, compiling a total of 19 offers. Dunn has cut his list down to just seven schools: North Carolina, Arizona, Texas, Vanderbilt, Clemson, Georgia and Louisville.
But who is in the lead for the talented shooting guard? One analyst believes it’s the Tar Heels.
Rivals reporter Corey Evans wrote about Dunn in his Twitter Tuesday mailbag where he answers recruiting questions about different programs. One of the topics was Dunn’s recruitment and which team might be in the lead at the moment.
Evans pointed out that there could be some surprise teams but as it stands now, Carolina is the leader and an early decision could favor the Tar Heels.
"If he were to make a choice soon, it would be between Arizona or North Carolina. Dunn is originally from Arizona, and moved to North Carolina last fall before beginning his junior year. Most of Dunn’s family remains out West, the Wildcats will need a primary scorer once the upcoming season completes, so Arizona is a strong suitor. However, UNC has been the talk all summer with Dunn. As with Arizona, the Tar Heels would like to add another scorer to their backcourt for next season.Carolina is the leader and Arizona is not far behind. If there is one wild card to watch it is Vanderbilt. Jerry Stackhouse has developed a very strong relationship with Dunn and his family and coaches. He will have to defeat two of the game’s best, but if anyone can do it it is Stackhouse and the Commodores."
The other interesting note in Evans’ piece is that Vanderbilt, led by former UNC standout Jerry Stackhouse, could be a dark horse in the recruitment. That would potentially the first big recruiting battle between Stackhouse and his former team.
As it stands now, UNC has just one recruit committed in the 2020 class landing a verbal from four-star power forward Dontrez Styles back in April. But Williams and his staff hope they can add another recruit and a guard at that. Dunn could be the perfect fit for another perimeter scorer on this team and as of now, things look good.
