5-star UNC basketball target picks up scholarship offer from John Calipari, Kentucky Wildcats

Roy Williams and the North Carolina basketball program have really prioritized back court prospects in the 2021 class of late. They’re looking to shore up any potential holes that next year’s squad might have, not the least of which is a possible vacancy left by 5-star freshman point guard Caleb Love. Nobody would be surprised to see the dynamic, play-making youngster leave Chapel Hill for the NBA after just one season, and the Tar Heels can’t afford to not be prepared for it.

Because of that, Hunter Sallis has become a primary target of the Tar Heels. A 6-foot-3, 165-pound point guard at Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska, Sallis is a shifty, athletic guard with good ball-handling skills and a nice crossover. He’s got a quick first step, and gets to the goal with speed and efficiency. He drives the lane well in traffic and through contact, and can easily finish above the rim. He scores at all three levels, rebounds well for his position and plays pesky, tenacious defense. Given his tremendous skill and upside, it’s easy to see why so many high-major programs have Sallis in their sights.

The Kentucky Wildcats joined that group on Friday night, extending Sallis a scholarship offer just days after missing out on the class’s top point guard prospect, Kennedy Chandler. Among the teams that Kentucky and North Carolina will have to beat out for Sallis are Auburn, Creighton, Florida, Florida State, Gonzaga, Kansas, Louisville, Memphis, Marquette, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas Tech and UCLA.

"“I think Hunter Sallis is really good,” said 247Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Snow. “He’s a big guard. He can play on or off the ball, good athlete, he shoots it well, he gets to the rim. He’s the complete package as a guard right now.”"

There’s no real indication at this point when Sallis plans to cut down his list, or make a final decision. He’s currently holding better than two-dozen offers, and we’ve got no idea which programs, if any, are standing out among the crowd. It seems safe to assume, however, that Kentucky and North Carolina will likely be among the teams to make the next cut for Sallis. It wouldn’t be surprising to see local teams like Creighton, Kansas and Nebraska make it the distance in Sallis’ recruitment as well.

Currently ranked 19th among players in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite, Sallis is second among players at his position, and the No. 1 recruit in the state of Nebraska.
