Roy Williams, UNC basketball program making up ground with 4-star power forward and Indiana native Trey Kaufman?

For some time now, Indiana native Trey Kaufman has been seen as a likely future Hoosier, but it may not be that easy for Archie Miller and company to get the 4-star big man to Bloomington.

A 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward, and a rising senior at Silver Creek High School, Kaufman is holding offers from Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina, Purdue, Virginia and Xavier, among others. So although the hometown Hoosiers might be difficult for Kaufman to turn down, offers from Louisville, North Carolina and Virginia are among those that muddy the waters for the talented big man.

Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans said as much in his Wednesday Mailbag, noting that Kaufman’s recruitment is seemingly far from over, and multiple contenders still remain.

"“In the 2021 class, Trey Kaufman is the guy for Indiana,” Evans writes. “Sure, there has been talk that he wouldn’t mind leaving the state for college and that after the North Carolina offer the Tar Heels may have surpassed the Hoosiers. Virginia is also in the mix, as are Louisville and Purdue, but Archie Miller rarely loses a battle for a top prospect from his state, and until proven wrong, I am going to stick with Kaufman for IU.”"

Although Evans concedes that Kaufman’s recruitment is still pretty wide open, he does believe that Indiana remains the most likely destination for Kaufman. Evans isn’t alone, as a consensus of analysts and insiders across 247Sports and Rivals have picked Indiana as Kaufman’s future school. Despite all of that, the Tar Heels have sneakily done a nice job of getting into a really good position for Kaufman as we approach the start of his senior season.

Kaufman is currently ranked No. 58 in the 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s 13th among players at his position, and second in the state of Indiana.
