UNC Basketball: Tar Heels lose out on five-star Kennedy Chandler
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program loses out on five-star point guard Kennedy Chandler as he commits to Tennessee on Friday.
The recruitment for UNC Basketball recruiting target Kennedy Chandler is over as the five-star point guard has made his verbal commitment.
On Friday, Chandler ended his recruitment and gave his verbal commitment to Tennessee as the Volunteers land a big recruit for their 2021 class. Chandler picked Tennessee over North Carolina, Duke, Memphis and Kentucky.
Chandler made his decision on his Instagram account as he streamed it live with ESPN’s SportsCenter.
The Kansas native is ranked No. 11 overall, No. 1 point guard and No. 1 in the state of Kansas by 247 Sports. He’s been a target of the Tar Heels for months now as UNC was in heavy pursuit.
Roy Williams and his staff even met with Chandler earlier in the week, hoping to impress the recruit as rumors swirled that he would be announcing soon. But with a recruiting dead period imposed by the NCAA in March still going on, it may have hurt the Tar Heels chances.
A few weeks ago it was reported that Chandler wanted to visit schools before making a decision but couldn’t due to COVID-19. That essentially hurt the Tar Heels chances as he was never able to get on campus.
The Tar Heels now turn their focus to a few other targets in the backcourt.
UNC has offers out to five-star combo guard Hunter Sallis, as well as five-star shooting guard Trevor Keels and four-star shooting guard D’Marco Dunn. Both Sallis and Dunn are legit options for the Tar Heels and just might be 1-2 on their list of recruits they can land.
