Does the UNC Basketball program have a shot with this four-star forward out of the Midwest after offering him recently?

The UNC Basketball program recently entered the race for four-star forward Trey Kaufman as Roy Williams officially extended the offer last week.

The talented forward out of Sellersburg, Indiana is starting to see his recruitment heat up a bit with the latest offering coming from the Tar Heels. Kaufman has a total 11 offers so far in his recruitment highlighted by top programs such as UNC, Indiana, Virginia, Louisville and Purdue.

But a week after they have offered, do the Tar Heels’ have any chance to plucking Kaufman out of the Midwest and getting him to Chapel Hill? One recruiting expert seems to think so.

Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans wrote on Kaufman’s recruitment and the Top 5 contenders involved, ranking them by the best chance to land him. Evans still believes that in-state Indiana is the favorites in the recruitment but he has the Tar Heels right behind them at No. 2 with a legit chance to add the recruit to their 2021 class.

Here is what Evans had to say about the Tar Heels’ chances:

"Kaufman would be a tremendous fit at North Carolina and the Tar Heels have had success with prospects like him in the past. Roy Williams’ program is one of the few elite college basketball outfits that remain reliant on big men lineups, and the Heels will see Garrison Brooksgraduate after the season. There is also a chance that Day’Ron Sharpe, Armando Bacot  and Walker Kessler test the NBA waters, too. If that happens, making a late run at Kaufman would not be a bad idea."

While UNC just recently offered, they haven’t been able to get Kaufman on campus and the chances to do that are dwindling. With the NCAA’s dead period, no recruits or coaches are allowed on visits until at least the end of August. But the expectation is that that deadline will be extended as well.

The good news for the Tar Heels is that Kaufman doesn’t appear in any rush to make a decision on a school anytime soon. So the chance to get him on campus is still there eventually.
