A top 2022 recruiting target for the UNC Football program is now off the board as he has cut his list down to just two programs

The UNC Football team is set up well at the quarterback position for the future as Sam Howell is set to enter his second season with the program. Following Howell, the Tar Heels have freshman Jacolby Criswell, a four-star commit in the 2020 class as well as four-star commit Drake Maye in 2021.

But Mack Brown and his staff know there’s always some room for depth, hence their pursuit of 2022 five-star recruit Gunner Stockton.

The Tar Heels were one of the teams in on Stockton’s recruitment, offering him and hoping he would join their 2022 class. However, they will need to move on now.

Stockton cut his list of 22 offers down to just two programs earlier this week making a big update to his recruitment. South Carolina and Georgia will now battle it out for the recruit as his recruitment hits a key stage.

Stockton is ranked No. 32 overall in the 2022 class as well as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback and No. 4 player in the state of Georgia per 247 Sports.

This would normally be a big loss for the Tar Heels, losing out on the recruitment but with the depth we mentioned above it stings a little less. UNC is going to have Howell for at least two more seasons and by the 2022 season Criswell will be a junior and Maye will be a sophomore.

Things are lined up nice for the Tar Heels down the line but it wouldn’t shock us to see Brown and his staff continue to target quarterbacks.

Next. Tony Grimes officially joins UNC for Fall semester. dark
