Roy Williams, UNC basketball set to host virtual recruiting visit with 5-star point guard Kennedy Chandler

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams and his staff will host a virtual recruiting visit with class of 2021 prospect Kennedy Chandler on Monday. Stockrisers’ Jake Weingarten was first to break the news via his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon.

The 5-star point guard named a list of five finalists in late April that includes Duke, Kentucky, Memphis, North Carolina and Tennessee. He also received a pair of HBCU offers last week, but there’s no indication at this time that he is strongly considering either. It appears for now that Chandler will take the more traditional route to the NBA, which will more than likely amount to just one season of college basketball.

All signs point toward Tennessee being that school, as evidenced by just about every college basketball insider and recruiting analyst from both 247Sports and Rivals. The Volunteers currently have 100 percent of votes across both channels, and they only look to be getting closer to a commitment as the months go by.

Still, though, Williams and his staff at UNC aren’t likely to let off the gas this late in the game. The same goes for each of his other finalists, as crazier things have happened in the past than a seemingly sure bet ending up choosing a path that almost nobody saw coming. Take Cole Anthony for example, who was being touted as a strong Duke lean in the weeks leading up to his commitment to North Carolina.

Unless things dramatically change, we expect to get a commitment from Chandler some time in the fall. And it’s unclear whether a release of the NCAA’s current recruiting freeze would slow down or speed up his decision.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Chandler, who left Briarcrest Christian for Sunrise Christian Academy after his junior season, is ranked 11th in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite for 2021. He’s No. 1 among point guards in the class, and tops in the state of Kansas.
