The UNC Basketball program has their eyes on this 2021 shooting guard but where do they stand in the race to land him?

With the calendar getting set to flip over to the month of August, the recruiting world will once again face a dead period due to COVID-19. For the UNC Basketball program as well as others, it’s going to have a big impact as they cannot travel to visit recruits or have recruits on campus.

Roy Williams and his staff are still in pursuit of some big targets in the 2021 class but not being able to evaluate them has been tough.

It’s tough to tell exactly where recruits stand during these times as literally anything can happen at any time with recruiting. But one target that is on UNC’s priority list might just be leaning a certain direction.

Five-star shooting guard Trevor Keels is among the top players in the 2021 recruiting class and has a total of 18 offers so far. Programs like UNC, Duke, Villanova, Virginia, Michigan and Ohio State amongst others have showed significant interest.

However, as it stands now one team might be the favorites to land him.

Rivals reporter Corey Evans wrote on Keels’ recruitment and how the a recent commitment to Villanova may change things for the guard:

"Seeing that Villanova is a guard-reliant program, the Wildcats could remain as a potential suitor for Trevor Keels. It will be a bit more difficult for Jay Wright and his staff to toss in Keels along with the two other guards that they have already landed, but if there is one system that can afford enough opportunities in the backcourt, it is Villanova. It would be difficult to turn Keels down if he still wanted to come to Villanova, but how might things now sit with the five-star? Does Virginia now take the lead? Where does Duke sit with the do-it-all guard? What about North Carolina? Can Nova hold off the pack? The dominoes are falling, which should lead to a crazy and hard-to-pin-down recruitment."

As Evans notes with his “Can Nova hold off the pack?” comment, it does appear that the Wildcats are the favorites right now for Keels. However, things could change and a program like UNC could make some big strides moving forward and become more involved.

Keels is ranked No. 16 overall, No. 2 shooting guard and No. 1 player in the state of Virginia per 247 Sports Composite rankings. He would be a huge get for the Tar Heels backcourt especially with the potential of Caleb Love leaving after just one season.
