Is the UNC Basketball program falling behind in the race for a five-star point guard? Why him not being able to visit Chapel Hill has hurt their chances

The UNC Basketball program is in pursuit of a few big recruits in the 2021 recruiting class as they hope to build on a top 2 class for 2020.

Roy Williams and his staff have eight offers out to prospects in the class including a couple of five-star targets. One of the biggest recruiting targets is five-star point guard Kennedy Chandler.

UNC has been in the race for Chandler for months now, making him a priority. But a recruiting dead period that was imposed in March and lasts through August won’t allow recruits or coaches to travel and it could impact the Tar Heels’ chances for Chandler.

Chandler talked to Rivals recruiting analyst Eric Bossi on Wednesday about his top 5 schools of North Carolina, Duke, Memphis, Kentucky and Tennessee. The five-star recruit broke down the latest with each school and had some interesting things to say about UNC.

He did say that UNC has been contacting him a lot but he’s unsure if he will be able to visit before making his decision:

"“They call me a lot. They really want me and I have a good relationship with them and they really want me to go down there. I promised them that I would go there and I really want to go there but with all this stuff I don’t know if I want to wait until like January. It is no offense to North Carolina, I love them, but January is a long time for me to wait to go and visit all five schools and then try to commit. I don’t want to wait too late.”"

That’s certainly not good news for the Tar Heels. If Chandler can’t get on campus soon for a visit, the Tar Heels could lose out on him.

It doesn’t appear as if Chandler wants to commit within the next few weeks but he doesn’t want to wait until January either. However, the longer this recruitment goes on the better the chances for the Tar Heels.

There is no sign of the NCAA lifting the ban anytime soon which spells some bad news for the Tar Heels. Let’s just hope that changes and he can get on campus eventually.
